HOW TO KEEP HOUSE WHILE DROWNING is a wonderful how-to book for cleaning and organization for neurodivergent, chronically ill, and disabled people written by an Own Voices therapist.
I don’t talk about my personal life much on this account but I am a chronically ill individual with ADHD. Some days, everything feels overwhelming because my body or my brain aren’t cooperating and I still have a list of care tasks! Enter: this book.
At just over 150 pages (3 hours on audiobook), this little book provides practical advice from someone who has dealt with overwhelm in a professional and personal way, particularly postpartum. The author reiterates ideas, clearly labeling them “Main Point” and explains literal translations of these ideas for people who have difficult in the abstract. This is easily the most accessible book I have read surrounding tasks that feel like all adults can do but I still struggle with. How validating!
K.C. Davis also has a useful YouTube channel in which she has a “clean with me” mini-series (for 15 or 30-minute increments) using the techniques she outlined in the book. You can find a brief synopsis under “5 Things Tidying method” which I have been practicing for the last 2 weeks.
